Kurt Andrew Buckley of Henry Lawson Drive, St Fillans, was sentenced to an eight-month Intensive Correction Order (ICO) and ordered to complete 75 hours of community service.
At about 8.45pm on Saturday, February 23, 2019, Buckley and the victim were in Mayne Street when the former began yelling at the latter about giving the family a bad name - even though the pair have the same surname they're not related.
Buckley grabbed the victim by the shirt and punched him multiple times, with the incident continuing after the victim attempted to get away, then defend himself, and even after patrons from a nearby pub came out and attempted to break it up, with Buckley pushing past them to get at him again.
"This was a serious, ongoing assault," magistrate Alexander Mijovich said. "Someone is trying to defend them self, people are intervening, and you're continuing to assault them."
When placing the defendant on the ICO - the most serious sentence that doesn't involve imprisonment - his honour added, "make no mistake, this is a jail sentence, you're just going to serve it in the community".
