In April Council undertook a feasibility study to assess the viability of such a facility in Mudgee. This was due to how highly rated the idea was among respondents to a survey of residents.

In the plans prepared for Council, the approximately $7.61 million Option 1, includes enclosing the existing pool and building a new program pool - this would need to include upgrading the 50m pool plant. This would have have the least impact on the site, however required upgrades to the plant mean that it's not recommended.
The approximately $7.10 million Option 2, includes the removal of the existing leisure and program pool to allow for a new (heated) 25m four-lane lap pool, plus a new combined program/leisure pool to be constructed.
The existing kiosk, change rooms, storerooms and administration area would be enclosed within the facility to allow for all-year-round access, plus mechanical ventilation throughout. The design intent is to integrate with the existing facility but does result in the loss of some of the existing open space around the current outdoor pool area.

The approximately is $9.25 million Option 3, maintains the existing 50m exterior lap pool - with the addition of a new 'purpose built' indoor pool area that can be used all-year-round.
The latter would be developed east of the existing facility, within the adjoining Lawson Park area.
Depending on the design and usage requirements, the new 25m indoor lap pool, with a combined indoor program/ leisure pool includes new change rooms, plant, and commercial lease spaces such as a café, administration and first aid areas.
The new entrance could face Short Street through an existing access point in the historic wall.
Currently there are indoor aquatic centres at a number of Central West locations, including Bathurst, Lithgow and Orange.
Over 60,500 visits to the Mudgee Pool occurred during the most recent swimming season, with around 2,200 season passes sold.
The cutoff for submissions is 4.30pm, Friday, August 16.
