I gave blood recently for the first time. I don't know why it took so long for me to get around to it. I think it's one of those things that everyone can agree is a good idea, but few make the - admittedly - little effort it takes to register.

The process was quick, unobtrusive and painless. Those afraid of needles don't really need to worry either. I don't like them, no one does, but I didn't even feel it go in.

Even better, once you're done, you can help yourself to all the free chocolates and cheese and bikkies you like while they keep an eye on you in case you feel a bit off, especially if you're donating for the first time.
And because it's 2019, they have an app. It's pretty cool actually, it lets you see when you can donate next, gives you your blood type and most importantly it allows the Australian Red Cross to text you when your blood is used to save a life.
I've received three texts so far telling me that my A+ (that's my blood type, not its quality...though I like to think I have good blood) blood 'is already at work', saving lives at Northwest Private Hospital.
You can become a bit of a blood donation convert, telling people how totally selfless you are because you gave up some blood, but it is pretty rad. The Red Cross Australia app will tell you when they're in Mudgee next.
This week is Donate Life Week. I shouted the positives of blood donation, that's all well and good.
But what are your thoughts on organ donation? Statistics show that overwhelmingly, Australians support organ donation - which is great.
However what the stats also show us is that not enough people are registered properly - not so great.
People often talk about selflessness, but I think that by living on through people whose lives you've saved is the greatest gift you can give yourself, your family and someone in need.
That's a real hero.
