The international program - which operates in nearly 70 countries - has schools form Eco-Committees to design and implement sustainability action. And there are award levels - bronze, silver, and green - which encourage them to further their projects and evaluate their effectiveness.
The CVPS Eco-School team is two students selected all classes from Years 2 to 6. They came up with the goal after they decided that waste was an issue in the school.
They were assisted by parents, teachers Mrs Daniell and Miss Shady, and the team from Red Hill Environmental Education Centre as they conducted the waste produced by the school on Monday. This was separated into general rubbish, organic waste, paper and cardboard and other recyclables, for the purposes of seeing how to work towards reducing it.
What became obvious was the amount of rubbish - specifically plastics such as wrappers and packaging - that was collected.
Thea Spencer a parent and part of the school's Garden Club said that litter that doesn't break down is one of the main problems they face. And that the Eco-Schools program is a small step towards the kind of cultural shift that reduce litter in the big picture.
"We're not the first school to do this, there are lots of amazing schools out there that we're looking to for inspiration," she said. "And they've actually changed their waste significantly, just buy providing some helpful information and handy tips to parents.
"It's kind of like a lifestyle choice and gradually our culture has drifted towards these pre-packaged foods, which is actually more expensive and not as healthy.
"If there's one place to start it's using quality, reusable containers."
While this year's CVPS Eco-Committee chose to campaign against litter, next year will likely see different students possibly set a different environmental goal for the program.
