We're in the grips of another record drought, we've endured some tragic losses and hectares of land has been lost to fire.
That's not counting the myriad difficulties some of us might face privately every day.
The world at large is struggling with the effects of climate change, the Amazon Rainforest is burning and it's never been more evident that those elected to represent the country don't really care about most of us.
Sometimes it can feel like it's all too much, like every day there's something new to be sad or worried about.
It makes it all the more heartwarming to see all the ways people in the Mid-Western Region choose to honour those we've lost.

A moment of silence was held at Council's most recent meeting for Soolan Clifford, who died a day before she was due to participate in another Mudgee Running Festival, she was loved by many.
All over Facebook people are changing their profile pictures to superheroes for Liam Potts who lost his battle with brain tumours last week. The Mudgee Guardian reached out to Liam's parents for their blessing to feature Liam on the front page, our small way of remembering him and giving people something to hold onto.
Tragedy struck again when a 28-year-old woman was killed as she was starting her work day in Mudgee.
No matter how you're feeling, there is always support. You don't have to go through anything alone.
The outpouring of grief and condolences for her and her family are more signs that people in our community cared for her and loved her as she deserved to be.
This weekend saw multiple fires, one that got so out of control that air support was called in. If it weren't for the hard-working and invaluable work done by the local firies, homes and lives could have been lost.
I will be speaking to our local NALAG this week to better understand and pass on how to deal with grief and loss and how to support those that are experiencing loss themselves.
