The Mudgee Guardian spoke with some of the women involved with this year's Pink Up Mudgee and the hotly-anticipated race day in October.

Lizzy Galloway said they have some great events and offers lined up this year with none other than former cricketer and McGrath Foundation co-founder Glenn McGrath coming to Mudgee for the spring event.

"You can actually bid to win an over with Glenn, to face against him. We will have fashions on the field, prizes a silent auction, and it's also a good family day as well," Lizzy said.

"So far ticket sales have been really good. Catering will be by Soul Mama and fashions will be Cherry Red.

"We had the pink races in 2016, but we had those huge floods so the races didn't go ahead. But we still had the day which was a huge success. This year's event will go ahead even if it rains."

Lizzy said her story has a touch of irony about it, being diagnosed with breast cancer last year after raising money in the past for breast care nurses she has since utilised.

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November last year, it was quite a strange irony to have been involved with raising money for breast care nursing and then finding myself needing to utilise their services," she said.

"Diana Thomas, she's our local breast care nurse. She's been a wonderful source of knowledge, a shoulder to cry and a huge person of importance I've come to find.

"So many other people with breast cancer in the community really rely on her for help and assistance with their chemotherapy and medical knowledge as they deal with it.

"I've finished six months of chemo and radiotherapy and I'm just coming good again. So when they asked if I wanted to be involved again I thought 'well I'd definitely like to be involved' now I've had to see what it is that they do. It's so important to have somebody like Diana in the community, particularly for people that can't travel for treatment."

Lizzy said it gave her a new perspective on breast care nursing.

"I think when you're raising the money you're just happy to be involved, but you can't even imagine what it's like to then be on the other side to go through it. Now I feel much more strongly about the incredible job they do," she said.

"Right through from when you're in the hospital having a mastectomy to your chemo and all the associated sickness and when you need help with your family, they're angels."
