The NSW Rail Museum will be bringing a special heritage train to Lithgow to celebrate 150 years of the railway line to Bowenfels on Saturday, October 19.
The Southern Hemisphere's largest operating steam engine, Beyer-Garratt 6029, will arrive at Bowenfels at 12.21pm. There will be a short ceremony on the platform to mark the significance of the day.
It is among a host of activities in Lithgow over the weekend, including Lachlan Valley Railway's shuttles from Lithgow train station to Wallerawang at 10.05am, 12.05pm, 2.05 and 4.05pm. There will be Devonshire tea from 10am-4pm at State Mine Heritage Park Railway aboard its genuine 1940's rail car.
The State Mine Museum will be open from 12-4pm.
The Lithgow Railway Workshop will be open for inspection, while Lithgow Valley Film Society will be hosting a special screening of steam train footage from the Central West.
On Sunday, a train full of happy enthusiasts will be travelling to Capertee for a fun day.
People interested in riding the train into Lithgow can join at Central, Strathfield, Parramatta or Penrith and alight at either Katoomba or Bowenfels. Bowenfels opened following the completion of the Zig Zag Railway in 1869. The station, which is of state significance, is recognised for the quality of the stonework and Victorian Rustic Gothic design.
"It is one of the best surviving stone station groups with intact early buildings that represent the first major phase of railway construction over the Blue Mountains during the 1860s and 1870s," the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage states.
