Pink Horses in Louee Street, Rylstone
Sunday coffee drinkers, soaking in the sun were met with cries of, "Hey look at that!" and "Look at all the horses", "Get your camera" as more than twenty horses with lady riders, clip-clopped down the street. With obvious 'Pink Up' ribbon designs painted on the horses and the riders covered in pink, it was a McGrath Foundation fundraising event. Rylstone almost turned back a century with all the horses in the main street.

Open Mike Night
A crowd gathered to be entertained by local talent and musicians from as far away as Bathurst and the Blue Mountains at the Open Mike Night at Kandos Return Services and Community Club on Saturday night. Local band 'Bushrock' hosted the event and was the backing band for many of the musicians. Presenter and 'Bushrock' singer Peter Hay introduced the acts. A trophy was up for grabs for the best act.
The musicians covered different genres of music from country, folk, rock and pop with songs from Slim Dusty, Neil Diamond, ABBA and some people's own original numbers. The night featured nine year old, girl Ella who was the crowd favourite taking out the competition trophy. The Chinese restaurant was open for great food and drinks were available at the bar. The Open Mic Night is on the last Saturday of every month at 5pm.

'000 Emergency' Meeting
An emergency services 000 meeting was held at the Kandos Returned Services and Community Club on Tuesday October 22nd, with all agencies of the emergency services in attendance. The meeting was intended to discuss how all agencies can best work together and the roles of members whilst attending emergencies such as motor vehicle accidents, fires and search and rescue situations.
The meeting was led by Mr Graham McCouat of the Rylstone Ambulance Service with speakers from each agency presenting on the roles of their respective service.
Agencies in attendance were:
- Endeavour Energy
- Rylstone/ Kandos Police
- Rylstone Ambulance, Sofala CFR and Rylstone Health Service
- Kandos NSW Fire and Rescue
- NSW Rural Fire Service (Bogee, Bylong, Clandulla, Glen Alice, Ilford, Lue, Olinda, Rylstone, Two Mile)
- Rylstone Volunteer Rescue Squad
- Sofala State Emergency Service (SES)
- National Parks and Wildlife Service
"The meeting was meant for all services to get together and gel." Mr McCouat said. He added: "it's the first time this year a meeting like this has been held."
Points raised were the dangers of electricity especially when cables are detached from power poles, machinery coming in contact with power lines and power lines down at accident scenes. There can be up to 132000 volts flowing through a power cable. Police are generally first responders as each situation can be a possible crime scene. The use of helicopters for patient removal by the Ambulance service, chain of command and how members of each service are identified, how each service works together at emergency scenes, communication, search and rescue, vehicles, tools, hospitals and health.
While presentations were based around emergencies, Police, NSW Fire and Rescue, VRA and RFS were called from the meeting to attend an emergency, which thinned out the crowd but did not stop proceedings. A smorgasbord by the Chinese restaurant was available at cost. The evening proved to be very informative.

The Lady Bushranger
A presentation of Kandos/Rylstone's own female bushranger hosted by Mr Lloyd Pitcher was held at the Kandos museum on Saturday. Elizabeth Jessie Hickman - "The Lady Bushranger" was born at Burraga NSW in 1890. Her parents separated when she was eight years old, and was placed in the care of a travelling horse show; Hyland's Vice-Regal Circus, and became famous as a roughrider. After several brushes with the law, Elizabeth gave birth to a boy, whom she named Hedley Rupert to Ben Hickman who later joined the show and wanted to marry her and settle down, but Jessie did not want to be tied to domestic life and wanted to live in the Wollemi wilderness near her brother in Kandos. She gave up her son to good friends Kitty and Paul who eventually separated and later Ben Hickman moved in with Kitty.
Elizabeth, known as Jessie, spent a couple of stints in Long Bay Gaol for stealing. After she was released, she visited her brother Hector Hunt in the Kandos/Rylstone area and eventually settled in the Nullo Mountain/Widden Valley area where she became established as a horse and cattle thief. She met a man named Andy Black whose real name was Charlie George, and she moved in with him.
Jessie found a cave high up on a steep rock face overlooking a vast valley and became the perfect hideout. She sold cattle to butchers looking for cheap meat not caring where it came from. She became leader of a gang of cattle thieves in today's Wollemi national park and spent her life on the run from Police as a warrant for her arrest was issued.
In her last days life became more erratic for her. She began having blackouts. She was referred to Newcastle Psychiatric Ward with a serious cerebral condition which continued to deteriorate until she died on September, 19 1936. She was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave at Sandgate near Hexham in Newcastle.
