Mudgee has been relaying since 2003 and over 11 events has raised an incredible total of $908,172.86 to help fund the Cancer Council's life saving research, information and support, and prevention programs.
The volunteer organising committee thanked the community for their generosity over the past 16 years and are hoping to see the support continue to not only hit a significant milestone for Mudgee, but also work towards providing a cancer free future.
"It would be such an achievement to reach this milestone of one million dollars towards beating cancer," Teresa Featherbe, chair of the committee, said.
"Relaying is our way of celebrating survivorship, remembering lost loved ones and fighting back against cancer."
Community relations coordinator for Cancer Council Western NSW, Nicola Taylor, said that Mudgee's sizable contribution over the years has helped local people affected by cancer.
"From these amazing fundraising efforts, we were able to continue providing financial assistance and legal services to local people who are financially disadvantaged through their cancer diagnosis," she said.
"We also connect local people with cancer nurses and psychologists through our 13 11 20 Information and Support line, and we receive hundreds of calls from people in the Mudgee area every year.
"This service is important as it ensures no-one faces a cancer diagnosis alone, and that people are connected with the information and support they need at the right time during their diagnosis."
The 2020 Mudgee and District Relay For Life is on the weekend of April 4-5 at Victoria Park and will also be the first 25-hour relay in the state - due to daylight savings ending that evening and the clocks turning back an hour.
