The Mudgee Wombats women's side has come home with the Plate from last Saturday's Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens Carnival. It's the second year that the local ladies have entered the tournament, held at Blue Mountains Grammar School. Winning three out of their five matches, the Wombats finished the day in third place. Mudgee's Lala LauTaimi was named Player of the Plate Final. "The girls played unbelievably - we didn't really have a chance to train together, we had the Mudgee Sevens, but not had a run as a team - so to accomplish what we did was incredible," she said. "There were a few from last year and some new girls as well - which is good and they loved it. "It was just a great day all round and you tell that the women are loving the game more every year and there's always more interest in it." From October onward there are a flurry of sevens tournaments held across the state - including Mudgee's own - which provide clubs with an opportunity to test themselves against sides from outside their usual divisions. The Blue Mountains and Greater West event pitted the Wombats against teams from Sydney and the Central Coast. With the Rebelettes Development - from Southern Districts - taking out the women's division, defeating the highly fancied Central Coast Academy 33-5 in the final despite having lost to them in the pool stages.
