We are in the middle of a drought. This mine will use millions of litres of water yearly.
I work at a mine near Ulan we are facing a stand down in March as we have nearly run out of water. The IPC made a determination about groundwater with this mine. They had no plan about its use or conservation, I have only read this from other sources. This alone should stop its progress.
Extract from report Sept 2019
"However, it found the environmental impacts, particularly on groundwater and productive agricultural land, would last long after the mine is decommissioned.
"The project is not in the public interest because it is contrary to the principles of [ecologically sustainable development] - namely intergenerational equity - because the predicted economic benefits would accrue to the present generation but the long-term environmental, heritage and agricultural costs will be borne by the future generations."
It is prime agricultural land, it would be destroyed forever. Rehab never returns land back to it former state and groundwater is lost forever.
In a time of drought and farmers land failing this shouldn't be turned into an open cut.
I agree with the IPC and as I said I'm a miner.
