Todd William Lasham of Bunderra Street, Gulgong, was also convicted in his absence, disqualified for six months, and fined a total of $550, for unlicensed driving in the unregistered vehicle and having a knife in a public place.
At about 11.35am on Friday, December 13, 2019, police were patrolling Wilbertree Road, Mudgee, when they saw a car leave one of the properties. They observed it speeding at about 180km/h towards the Castlereagh Highway and cross onto the incorrect side of the road at a bend.
It headed onto Saleyards Lane, crossing onto the wrong side again, before it was stopped. A check revealed that the registration was cancelled and the 32-year-old driver admitted to being unlicensed.
Officers conducted a search and a knife was found in Lasham's pocket. In his backpack they discovered a cylindrical item that he said was a "sparkle bomb".
On advice from the Bomb Disposal Unit, they pulled it apart, Inside the foil wrapping were; six CO2 canisters; matches; and approximately 35g of gunpowder.
$2,310 in fines for growing, supplying cannabis and having stun gun
A Cooks Gap man was sentenced for multiple charges arising from when police - who attended his property to speak to a different person - noticed cannabis growing in a veggie plot.
Stephen Thomas Dibble of Nimoola Road, Cooks Gap, was fined a total of $2,310 for cultivating a prohibited plant, supplying a prohibited drug, and possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit.
At 11.30am on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, detectives knocked on the door of his residence to speak with another person there regarding a drug investigation. As they waited for a response they noticed five cannabis plants growing in a nearby veggie plot.
After obtaining a mobile phone number from a tradesman working at the property, they called the 60-year-old who said he was in town but was returning soon. The detectives then requested and received a search warrant.
Dibble admitted to owning the plants and that there was more cannabis in the house. Multiple bags of the drug, totalling 458g in weight, were located in a metal strong-box.
Also inside the house was a torch-stun gun that he didn't have a permit to possess. Dibble said he used it for protection when fossicking.
The defendant submitted a written plea of guilty to the charges and was sentenced in his absence. Magistrate David Day, upon reading about the weapon, said, "I don't accept the explanation, why would you want something you can only deploy at close range?".
Mid-range charge was laid after man rolled and was ejected from vehicle
A driver who was found to be in the mid-range after he rolled his vehicle, was fined $330 and disqualified for three months to be followed by a 12-month interlock period.
Curtis Donald Wright of Lesters Lane, Mudgee, had submitted a written plea of guilty to the charge and was sentenced in his absence.
During the afternoon and evening of Saturday, December 21, 2019, the 21-year-old had been drinking at a rural property to a point where a witness decided to take his keys. However, at about 11pm he was able to start his vehicle anyway and left.
While driving along Oakey Creek Road, Coolah, he lost control and rolled four times. Wright was ejected from the vehicle.
He was flown to Tamworth Hospital where he was treated for a fracture and internal bleeding. A blood sample was taken that showed he had a prescribed concentration of alcohol of 0.109.
Upon reading the facts submitted to the court, Magistrate Day noted, "he was so intoxicated a witness took his keys away". His honour also noted that the defendant had received a Conditional Release Order, without a conviction being recorded, for an earlier mid-range offence.
"This time he had an accident," he said. Although he chose not to re-sentence him for the prior matter, instead to "leave him sitting on that" order.
