As the chairperson of the organising committee for the celebrations, I would like to introduce and thank our committee. Michelle Gaudry, Tony Harrison, Peter Willis, Margaret Meredith, Bill Murphy, Kevin and Jan Robson and Councillor Percy Thompson. I would also like to thank local Historian Ruth Davis for all her help in my research for this booklet.
Thank you to our sponsors including Mid-Western Regional Council, Stacks Variety Store and the Gulgong Chamber of Commerce and Prince of Wales Hotel. Without their support we would not be able to hold this weekend. Everyone is invited and welcome to join with us in celebrating Gulgong's 150 years of amazing history.
Where It All Began
"Rush-O, Rush-O, Rush-O, Gold-Gold-Gold!". On April 14, 1870, the cry rang out and overnight the town of Gulgong was born. The above quote from "Written in Gold - the story of Gulgong" describes the sound of the first discovery of gold in Gulgong. In its gold rush days Gulgong was a town bustling with men and their families trying to live as best they could in the poor living conditions that surrounded them.
There was an extreme lack of water and the overcrowding of people made living clearly impossible. These conditions resulted in sickness and epidemics. This was the plight of the Gulgong gold miners. The Gulgong Goldfields have, to date produced 555,300 ounces of gold, worth over $1 billion today, and surveys indicate the possibility that more gold could still be discovered.
