With the support of Central West Rugby and other clubs within the region, the Mudgee Rugby Club is confident it can meet all Covid-19 restriction requirements for the 2020 juniors, womens and seniors competitions.
However due to travel and crowd restrictions associated with the pandemic, the committee has been forced to postpone two highly anticipated events on the 2020 calendar.
Initially the Mudgee Wombats under 16s tour of New Zealand was planned for April this year, but it will go ahead when embargoes on international travel are lifted and it poses no risk to the participants.
"To be able to immerse themselves in both the rugby and the culture of New Zealand is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the group so it's really important to the committee that we see it through," committee spokesperson, Ros Lee said.
The pandemic has also curbed plans for this year's 32nd Mudgee Rugby Sevens event slated for October 10.
The event brings more than 500 players and coaching staff along with supporters to the Mudgee community each year, however in light of the uncertainty, the tough decision to cancel the event needed to be made.
"The club acknowledges how important the event is to the whole community in terms of tourist revenue," Lee said.
"However that brings with it a significant risk to the community we're just not prepared to take."
The Mudgee Wombats seniors competition kicks off on July 18 in Parkes, with the juniors and seniors at home the following weekend.
Information about games, training, events and updates can be found on the Wombats' Facebook or by following the 'Wombatsrugby' Instagram account.
