Rylstone man sentenced for confrontation while carrying axe
A 66-year-old man charged with carrying an axe when confronting two men in a Charbon street, as well as intimidation, has been handed the contemporary equivalent of a suspended prison sentence.
Christopher Leo Brierley of Nullo Mountain Road, Rylstone, was sentenced to a nine-month Intensive Correction Order, with a condition that he undertake counselling.
At about 4.20pm on December 27, 2019, the victims of the incident were returning to the Charbon house. During which time, Brierley was visiting a friend, who was one of their neighbours.
He approached them about a burn-out that had been performed in the street earlier. As he did so, he was holding an axe that had a 10x10cm blade and was making a number of non-specific threats.
The situation escalated further when Brierley began yelling abuse and goading one of the men into a physical confrontation. It was noted that there were a number of people present at the victims' residence, who could hear the incident unfold.
Brierley was told to put the axe on the ground and to calm down. He set the axe down, however then approached one of the victims in a way that made them fearful of being assaulted and in turn was punched to the ground.
The police were called and Brierley was restrained until his friend arrived to take him from the scene. Upon their arrival, officers noted that he appeared to be intoxicated.

Multiple domestic offences, AVO breaches
A Gulgong man charged with multiple domestic offences - including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and four counts of breaching an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) - was sentenced to an 18-month order with 80 hours community service.
Jason Peter Ellery of Canadian Lead Road, Gulgong, was charged with the assault offence, along with property damage, following an incident on the afternoon of December 5, 2019. After an argument outside the house, the victim went inside and held the door shut by leaning against it.
The 33-year-old then shoulder-barged the door, breaking a glass panel and the architrave. As a result, the victim suffered scratches from the broken glass and bruising from the impact.
An interim AVO was put in place, with a condition that Ellery not contact the victim. Which he breached on December 24, by calling her a number of times, using derogatory put-downs during one call that was answered.
After making more calls on December 28, the victim contacted police. This led to a charge of resisting police, when Ellery struggled with officers who arrested him after encountering difficulties when questioning him about the calls.
He was also charged with breaching the AVO by calling and waking the victim in the early hours of December 22. And by making multiple daily calls from January 6.
