John Carters stepped into the role of principal of Mudgee Public School (MPS) at the beginning of term three following the retirement of the former headmaster, Alan Kerr.

Before his new position, Mr Carters was principal of Rydalmere East Public School and Peats Ridge Public School.

Whilst waiting to hear if he was successful with the role, John, his wife and kids were waiting on the family's new arrival.

And not long after he was born, they moved.

"We have absolutely been loving Mudgee, everyone has been so welcoming," he said.

"The school has just been absolutely fantastic. Ros Rodgers, the deputy principal and Donna have done a wonderful job inducting me, and the staff have been incredibly welcoming as have the parents and particularly, the kids.

"I've been getting out on the playground at lunchtime and the kids have been coming and telling me lots about themselves, and have been giving lots of tips for things my kids can do as well.

"It's just been great, getting to know everyone."

The news that John was successful in his application was a welcomed surprise as it "seemed like a very exciting opportunity".

"From a personal point of view, the opportunity to move to a town like Mudgee doesn't come up often so you would be silly not to have a go," he said.

"My wife and I couldn't believe it when we got the news, we were still waiting for our son to arrive, it was all very exciting."

One of the most mesmerizing things Mr Carters has noticed since the start of his role is just how phenomenal MPS' staff are.

"The thing that has been great to learn about the school is that the staff are so incredibly compassionate and empathetic, and just so keen on supporting all the students across the school," John said.

"The way the teachers work together is just fantastic, it doesn't surprise me but it's one of the things that shows me just how lucky I am to be here.

"I don't intend on going anywhere for a long time. We're very happy to be here in Mudgee, I feel very privileged to have this position."
