With only two more rounds to go until the finals are in full swing, the Mudgee Wombats first grade squad are hopeful of their chances to make it all the way, while the women's side have booked their grand final ticket.
Last year, the first grade side fell in an agonizingly close run against CSU, 32-29, who went on to win the New Holland Cup grand final, while the batties women finished in eighth place.
First grade captain Tom Dunstan says getting a week off before their final two pushes towards a final spot is greatly appreciated, given their previous efforts.
"It's definitely a good time for the bye, we had two tough games and now we get a break before our final run to the end of the season," he said.
"The squad is still really positive. We are all working towards finishing on top which is one of our goals for this season."
With back to back byes also appreciated by the women's side who happen to be carrying a few injuries, Helen Blackmore says it's giving her players the chance to 'regroup and focus' heading into their grand final clash against CSU after defeating the Wellington Redbacks, 55-17.
"CSU are a great bunch of girls, we always look forward to the games with them. We lost to them the last time we played so we need to make sure we are well prepared," she said.
"If we stick to our game plan, train hard and not let the excitement of finals get to us, we will do just fine.
"Our girls all know their positions and know what they need to do, so we will continue to keep working on what we do best, work as a team."
Up against the Dubbo Rhinos in a week's time, Dunstan admits there is a few things that need to be 'tweaked' in terms of game play but believes the batties have enough to go all the way.
"We just have to keep focusing on our game and if we are at our best we can definitely take it to any teams in the comp," he said.
"We have definitely given ourselves every chance to make the finals this year so that is definitely our main goal for the rest of the season.
"Making it to the finals is what most of us play for so it always means a lot to everyone."
The first grade men will face Dubbo on home turf on September 12, followed by a clash with CSU on September 19. The women will also do battle with CSU on September 19 at 12.45pm in foreign territory.
