About 9pm on Monday police were called to the Newell Highway at Tomingley after a B-double truck lost eight pallets of packaged liquor from his load.

It is understood the truck driver swerved on the highway to avoid hitting a kangaroo.

The highway was blocked for about three hours while the alcohol was cleaned up.

The driver was not injured in the incident.

Narromine Police Sergeant Michael Smith is warning road users to take caution when driving at night.

"We have noticed a recent increase in kangaroos on the roads around Narromine shire, mostly at night," he said.

"Whilst it often comes down to making a split second decision, drivers need to be aware that taking evasive action can at times lead to an outcome that is worse than a collision.

Sergeant Smith encouraged local drivers to visit the Transport NSW website to familiarise themselves with advice about animals on country roads.

In June it was revealed Dubbo was on top of a 2019 list of hotspots in NSW for collisions between animals and motor vehicles.

NRMA Insurance released the data which revealed animal-related collisions peaked during June, July and August.

The list has Dubbo at the top with 236 collisions involving animals followed by Armidale with 162.

Transport NSW safe driving tips include reducing your speed when you see animal warning signs, stay alert and expect the unexpected, brake safely and never swerve. It is safer to hit an animal than swerve and lose control of a vehicle.
