Events have taken a hit this year and for Mudgee Community Preschool much of their social calendar also doubles as important fundraising, but they've found away to make lemonade from lockdown lemons.
The 2020 Mudgee Community Preschool Social Club is of a group of parent volunteers who work to raise funds, foster family involvement and develop a sense of community. And during the pandemic it looked like they had their work cut out for them.
However, what they came up with was the Cook & Play Book, a collection of favorite recipes, activities, jokes and drawings from students and staff of the Preschool.
Throughout the book that there are references to what kids did during lockdown with their families, such as on Page 8 a "painting of the Putta Bucca Wetlands that our family has been visiting for exercise and fresh air". Along with over 70 recipes submitted by the children along with their photos and drawings, as well as over 30 fun activity ideas.
Mudgee Preschool director, Rosie Gibbs, acknowledged the work of Kim Gribble and Sarah Baume of the Social Club on the project, which she said, "is a way to focus on what you can do, not what you can't do anymore during COVID". And added that the book is also a time capsule full of accounts of people living through the pandemic.
"Of course this year we've missed out on a lot of those opportunities, we haven't been able to have Open Day or groups of families coming in for our annual family dance at the end of the year," she said.
"So right at the beginning of the pandemic they suggested getting in touch with the families and asking them to send in ideas for what they enjoy cooking and playing during COVID.
"I think it's a special book that's come out of a unique time in our history. And they've acknowledged that in the blurb on the back, which is important.
"And it's a great memory for the children of their time at Preschool. It's got their drawings, their stories, and every class has contributed and every child is a part of it."
