In Australia, the statistics paint a grim picture, with women being hit hardest by the pandemic with more women than men live below the poverty line.
Share the Dignity are encouraging the Mudgee community to donate a handbag (new or used in good condition) carrying essential items for women and girls in need that will make a difference to their daily life.
Those donating are reminded to include essentials such as a sealed packet of pads and tampons, roll-on deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and soap, as well as luxuries including lip balm, new socks or a magazine.
Bags are to be donated to Bunnings Warehouse and can be done up until November 29.
"I've seen firsthand just how much happiness these handbags filled with items have brought local women and girls. They simply can't contain the joy they feel, and we've all been moved to tears watching them receive the bags. And little extra treats like socks and magazines have brought out so many smiles," Share the Dignity volunteer Joy Shaw said.
