Backflips, leaps and rolls. Young people were thrilled to give these stunts a go (maybe not the backflips) in the latest Mid-Western Regional Youth Council event.

"Introduction to parkour" was the latest in an exciting range of activities and events across the region, all part of the Autumn school holidays and Youth Week 2021.
Parkour is a sport where the aim is to get from one place to another in the most efficient way possible, and it often involves jumping or climbing over obstacles, but facilitators Action Reaction first taught participants how to land and roll safely.
It might sound intimidating, but the event was designed to be highly accessible and low-pressure according to Action Reaction CEO Samwise Holmes.
"We're doing really basic sort of parkour and acrobatic stuff, but in a way that allows them to be free, explore their own abilities and have fun," he said.
"Parkour is all about jumping over things, climbing and rolling around. It's such a free sport that it's best not to be too structured."
Young people from the region found it was a great opportunity to step outside their comfort zones.
"It was my first time doing this sort of thing, and it was so fun. I was surprised I could do the jumps, it wasn't something I thought I could do," Hope Irwin said.
For siblings Jaxxon and Alexxia Wake, the event was a great chance to cement their skills and growing passion.
"I got involved with parkour through watching it on Youtube, I like watching them jump over rooftops. I've even got my own parkour set-up at home, which Dad helped me build," Jaxxon Wake said.
"I absolutely loved it, it was great to just get out of my comfort zone. We'll be practicing more, so thank you to the Council for putting it on," Alexxia Wake said.
