It's 30 years since ARIA winner Gyan sang her hit Wait from the cliffs of Kiama on Countdown.
The ARIA-award winning artist went on to work with the likes of Bon Jovi, Ricky Martin and LeAnn Rimes before settling in Byron Bay.
Gyan has continued to create music, but has broken away from the restrains of the commercial music industry. Her collaboration with Michael Leunig at Sydney Opera House, Billy the Rabbit won her a Sydney Theatre Award, and she has won runner-up/shortlist awards for her album, Superfragilistically, and children's book, How Weird Is That.
Gyan has just announced her "Retrospective" tour, an intimate and reflective journey through the twists and turns of her career, which she will bring to the Prince of Wales Opera House in Gulgong on 13 June.
Gyan's musical catalogue spans over 30 years, and like many in recent times she has had time to reflect on the past.
"I don't find looking back easy, I'm sort of a person who is looking forward. There's some songs I can't actually relate to because you change and it's like getting back into a jacket that doesn't fit you anymore. I tend to do songs that I can still really embrace and it's very easy for me to just disappear into the story," she said.
"I feel like it's clearing the slate and, and going, 'Where do you go forward, now that you've had a look over your past?' I hope the audience can travel down that road with me and enjoy it."
Gyan has always been grateful for her start in the music industry, but it didn't begin how she expected.
"I'm strictly not the pop singer that I guess I'm known for. That song (Wait) took off, but that was like a B-side for me. I didn't think it had those sort of legs," she said.
"Your path unfolds before you and you don't really have any control over it. The artist's road is never really straightforward."
Gyan has invited her multi-instrumentalist partner Si Greaves and violinist Veronique Serret to join her onstage, along with jazz artist Tanya Sparke.
