However, it wasn't to be for the swoopers with the Red V bridging the gap in the second half and running out 26-20 victors.
It was a close tussle in the opening stanza of the contest, with neither side able to cross the stripe.
After a number of opportunities on the Mudgee try line, Isaac Jones managed to get the home side on the board, while Thomas Rose added the extras to take the score to 6-0.
The Dragons quickly hit back with an unconverted try however it was all the Magpies for the remainder of the half.
After a number of handling errors from Mudgee, Todd Pangas made it 10-4 in Cowra's favour.
Moments before half time, Will Ingram barged his way through the Mudgee defensive line and went all the way in an impressive individual effort to take the score to 16-4.
Tyrone Eastwood posted the first points on the resumption of play, giving Cowra a 20-4 lead.
While it looked like they were home, the Cowra defensive line started to fall apart and Mudgee crossed for two unanswered tries to level the scores.
With seven minutes remaining in the contest, the visitors scored once again and the Magpies found themselves competing against the clock.
In the last minute of play, Eastwood crossed for his second, only for the try to be disallowed and Magpie hearts were once again broken in a close fought game this season.
