Gulgong's Michelle Bromley (nee Beaumont) is a source of inspiration not only for the region's athletes in terms of sporting achievements but also in perseverance.
After multiple setbacks, including missing out on securing a place at the previous three Olympics, Michelle rose above to now be living her dream.
Mid-Western Regional Council mayor, Des Kennedy, spoke of Michelle's achievements and said it is outstanding for an individual from the area to reach such a high level.
"It's fantastic for our region to have somebody raised here over there in Tokyo at the moment preparing for the Olympics," Mr Kennedy said.
"The amount of work that young lady would've put in to become a world class table tennis player...I couldn't even begin to imagine how dedicated she is."
Mr Kennedy considered Michelle to be an athlete those in the area should look up to.
"Many of us have kids or grand-kids who look at the stars of the game and aspire to be that," Mr Kennedy said.
"If they can see that a young lady from Gulgong can get to the Olympic Games, it will inspire them regardless of what sport they love.
"They know there's a light at the tunnel if they work hard enough."
