With the delay of local council elections to December, one unusual circumstance meant a new deputy mayor must be elected at the regular Mid-Western Regional Council meeting on Wednesday, September 15.
The legislation postponing the election extended the term of the mayor but not the deputy mayor. The current deputy mayor is Sam Paine who was first elected into the role almost exactly three years ago in September 2018.
Previously councillor Paine confirmed that he will be running for the position again. "If the councillors are happy with my performance so far, I look forward to assisting mayor Kennedy in seeing us through to the end of this most unusual term," Cr Paine said.
The September meeting will be conducted over Zoom, so was first time this council has elected an official via a video conference. The mayor will be elected by the councillors following the local council election currently planned for December.
