In order to recognise the resilience of this year's Year 12s, Mudgee High School staff arranged for 'care packages' to be sent to their students on September 17 to align with their online assembly.

"While we were disappointed we couldn't have the normal celebrations, we tried to make the best of the situation," Mudgee High School year 12 advisor, Andrew Laurie, said.

"The students have been pretty amazing with it all. They were appreciative of what we did and haven't complained much throughout the whole time they've been going through this.

"We organised care packages which the whole staff got on board with. It was a massive effort to put together but everyone pitched in.

"We tried to make it as special as possible."

The 'care packages' were made up of personalised key tags, mugs in a cup, tie-dyed rainbow socks, homemade stress balls, bookmarks, rainbow cookies donated by GorJess Treats, sweets, letters and messages from staff, photo collages and gifts from specific teachers.

As part of the celebrations, the school put the call out for celebrities to send well wishes to students, and much to their surprise, 20 responded.

"We had celebrities like Guy Sebastian, Tim Minchin and Fletch and Hindy all send messages of support to let the students know just how well they are doing in such tough times," Mr Laurie said.

While it "wasn't the Rainbow Day staff or the year 12s wanted", it is hoped the colourful affair will return during December in all its glory.

"With vaccination rates, we're hoping later in the year we can do some face to face stuff. December 3 is when the last HSC exam is, so we've penciled in some rough dates for the weeks following," Mr Laurie said.

"We're trying to do a Rainbow Day and the staff versus students soccer match on Wednesday, December 8. Touch wood everything is right with the restrictions and we're able to do that.

"The week after we're looking at the Year 12 graduation assembly and of course, the year 12 formal at Parklands Resort on December 15.

"We're very hopeful and optimistic that we'll be able to go ahead with some of the stuff they've missed out on."
