With one in 10 occupants of Macquarie Home Stay coming from Mudgee over the past 12 months, the facility has been a safe haven for many from the Mid-Western area.

"Just under 10 per cent of all our guests come from just the Mudgee township, but when you look at the Mid-Western Council LGA, it actually pushes closer to 14 per cent," Macquarie Home Stay managing director, Rod Crowfoot said.

"We never thought Mudgee residents would ever really need to use us, it wasn't seen as a major focal point. We always thought it would be people from Cobar, Lightning Ridge, and places like that."

Although located in Dubbo, Mr Crowfoot maintained that the facility is for people of all ages outside of the area, including those who live in the Mid-Western region.

"As much as it's not in Mudgee, it's for Mudgee people when they've got to come to Dubbo for medical care," he said.

"We help with affordable accommodation, we provide a big common room where you can do your own cooking, and you can do your own washing on site. We try to help you as a patient have something that's akin to what you would have at home.

"These past two and a half years for us has been a really important time for us to solidify what our role is and how we support people from places like Mudgee who need to come across."

With a 98 per cent occupancy rate in May this year, Mr Crowfoot said plans have been made to increase the number of units available to keep up with demand.

"We're turning away on average three people a day because we can't fit them in," Mr Crowfoot said.

"We're looking at building more accommodation, and we have council approval. We're wanting to go from 17 units to 63 because of the demand.

"There will be some family units because the people who are staying with us sometimes are coming with a partner and the children so they need a bigger place to stay.

"We're not just for kids, we're for everybody."
