A humbled Peter Roche has thanked his community after Gulgong Butchery were awarded four placings at this year's Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.
As owner, Mr Roche entered the butchery's traditional beef thin sausages, chicken and pear sausages, country style beef jerky and country style chilli beef jerky into what he thought was a state-wide competition.
Unbeknownst to Mr Roche, the Gulgong-made products reaped the rewards against national competitors, taking a silver for their traditional beef sausages and three bronzes for the remaining entries.
"We work long hours, we work hard. We know we've got a good product but to get recognition of this standard is very pleasing," Mr Roche said.
"We were up against a lot of butchers. I thought it was just NSW-based but there ended up being a lot of butchers from Western Australia and Victoria, it was a national competition.
"It's not just a personal achievement, it's great for our town."
Mr Roche was "blown away" to receive a score of 84 out of 100 for his silver-medaled traditional sausages, which were judged on size, fat and taste, receiving just six points less than the gold-awarded entry.
"This was the first time we entered the competition...and to get a silver on our first go is very pleasing, and also to be so close to the gold," Mr Roche said.
"We're going to have another crack again next year because we were so close. We definitely want to get a gold medal."
Gulgong Butchery, who are regular winners at the NSW Sausage King competition, are located at 118 Mayne Street, Gulgong.
