The 22-year-old arrived at a home in Glenroy about 12am on Thursday when a man came up behind him and threatened him with a weapon, police say.
The attacker struck the driver in the face, causing a deep cut from his mouth to his ear.
The driver managed to return to a Glenroy pizza store to raise the alarm.
He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
The attacker was last seen running away with the driver's wallet. Police searched the area but were unable to find him.
