Local Unit Controller, Ian Forrester, said volunteers will be out and about in specific areas of Mudgee to provide information on how to prepare their home for severe storms and flooding.
“We’ve identified a few areas that are prone to flash flooding in the Mudgee township and we will be doing a door knock this Saturday,” he said.
“We will also give them some wheelie bin stickers to remind the residents in these areas that it does strike and to be prepared for these events.”
With the help of a community grant from the NRMA, the SES had wheelie bin stickers and Stormsafe coffee cups made as visual reminders to local residents.
Mr Forrester added that on the following Saturday (September 7) the local unit will be doing a display at Mudgee Bakery and Café.
“They’ve kindly taken the offer to hand out some Stormsafe coffee cups and there will be a couple of members on hand to talk to people about how to prepare their home,” he said.
It’s all for SES Stormsafe Week which runs from September 1 to 8.
The organisation aims to get the message out in September prior to the start of the storm season (October to March).
Mr Forrester said that while storms can happen at any time during the year 72 per cent of all storm response jobs attended by the NSW SES were between October and March.
Data from NRMA Insurance said that half of all home insurance claims last year were due to damage from storms.
