About 9am, a 73-year-old man took off in a light aircraft from a rural property, about 30kms north of Mudgee.
Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low over properties at Kains Flat, before stalling and crashing into a paddock and suffering major damage.
They went to the pilot’s aid and cut him out of his safety harness before removing him to safety.
Police, NSW Ambulance Paramedics and the Rural Fire Service attended the scene and the man was airlifted to Orange Base Hospital.
He received treatment in hospital for fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.
Investigations into the cause of the plane crash are continuing.
