The $90,000 improvement is a joint contribution by Mid-Western Regional Council, grants from the state government and fundraising by community organisations.
Mid-Western Regional Council general manager Warwick Bennett said it was great to be providing the youth of Gulgong with an upgraded facility. He also said Mudgee Skate Park would see its upgrade later this year.
The skate park makeover was funded by Council in partnership with a $30,000 grant from NSW Sport and Recreation and with support from the Gulgong Skate Park Working Party. The working party raised funds to help with the work and will continue its fundraising to provide furniture for the skate park area.
Both facilities will have new grind rails, grind boxes and kicker ramps.
The new ramp design was put together by Sk8Scapes, a skate park design and construction company, after consultation with the Gulgong Skate Park Working Party and local young people. The design, featuring three main sections, can be used by skateboarders and bmx or scooter riders.
Ramp frames have been painted a light grey colour to help keep them from getting hot in the sun. The ramp surface is a special blended material called Redz that is made for skate ramps and is waterproof and fireproof. The new ramps also come with standard steel safety fences.
Mid-Western Regional Youth Council lobbied Council in 2011 for skate park improvements in Mudgee and Gulgong as Kandos saw an upgrade in 2009.
From about July last year considerable consultation began with Gulgong and Mudgee youths about potential park designs.
Both facilities will have new grind rails, grind boxes and kicker ramps.
