Since the first meeting of the leadership and personal development program, held in February, it has been a long six months for the participating students and coaches.
“It’s taken a huge amount of effort from everyone involved,” said project manager Carol Cockerill-Wright.
The 2012 program featured as many coaches as participants, with each of the students from St Matthew’s Catholic School and Mudgee, Kandos and Gulgong High Schools able to work one-on-one with their own mentor.
“We were very lucky with the coaches this year. Everyone has been a success story,” said David Nelson, president of the board at Club Mudgee.
This year was Club Mudgee’s sixth year of supporting the Club Mudgee program, making it one of the longest running programs across the country.
“This really says something special about Mudgee’s vision for its young people,” said Max Potential coordinator Wayne Deeth.
It’s all about making things happen,” Dalena said. “I’m an even better version of who I was.
It was also the sixth year of participation from Mudgee High School, which had four Max Potential students in 2012.
Gulgong High student Emily Birchall took to the stage at one point, wowing the crowd with a song she’d written about her Max Potential experience.
St Matthews student Dalena Vo spoke afterwards on behalf of the students, encouraging others to take part next year.
“It’s all about making things happen,” Dalena said. “I’m an even better version of who I was.”
To the surprise of everyone, when it came time for the coaches to speak, they burst into song instead. Mentor Natalie McLean came up with the idea to create a song about each of their students. Each mentor sang a small verse about their own student and then came together for the chorus.
After 22 weeks of commitment and hard work, each of the students, mentors and schools were presented with a participation certificate at the end of the formalities.
The Max Potential Program was proudly sponsored this year by Ulan and Moolarben Coal Mines, Landmark, McDonald’s Bakery and Peter Druitt and Co as well as major sponsors Club Mudgee and the Mid-Western Regional Council.
“The program wouldn’t exist without the sponsors,” said Club Mudgee CEO Maureen Heywood.
