There were 26 men and three lady members competing in the latest round of Veterans golf at Mudgee Golf Club on Tuesday.
The course is starting to dry out after recent rain and there are four temporary greens in place.
The winner on the day was John Novak on 36 points. He won on a countback from Ross Smith.
Roger Catchpole took third place in an amazing three-way countback with Bruce Bell and James Anderson - all on a score of 35 points. Players needed a score of 28 points or better to win a ball in the Ball Pool.
Nearest to the pin on the 11th hole was Reg Hughes. His shot ended 3.85m from the hole and earned a couple of bottles of wine.
The daily scratch rating for the men was 72 and ladies 73.
The next local Veterans day will be May 13. It will be an Open stableford event for the Ewan Burgman trophy. Mudgee Veterans are encouraged to travel to Dubbo on May 9, to compete for the Barry Harvey Shield. Players are asked to record their names on the entry sheet on the MGC noticeboard. Anyone requiring carts should contact the Dubbo Pro Shop.
Mudgee Veterans now have the opportunity to compete in two new events which will run over the 2014 season.
The first is the Eclectic competition which records a player’s best attempt at each hole over the season. Leading the eclectic is Drew Pirie who has a gross of 71 and nett 67 ½ , followed by the ever reliable Roger Catchpole with 75 gross and nett 69 ½.
The other event is the Veterans Order of Merit. The players earn points from 30 to one, based on their position in the field on any singles Veterans event. The leader so far is Roger Catchpole on 86 points, after three rounds played.
Roger has played consistently at the top of the field each time to earn an average of over 28 points each round. Coming in second is Bruce Bell on 77 points followed by Drew Pirie on 70 points. Players can follow their own progress on their Home Page on the MGC website under the Leaderboard tab.
