The one-round wonder has done it again.
A three under par round from Matt Consadine secured his fourth consecutive Easter Open title on Saturday. The win also saw the Mudgee Golf Club captain’s fifth Easter Open title in seven years.
“It feels great, really great,” Consadine said yesterday.
“I hit the ball really well. I missed two fairways and two greens but recovered from them pretty well and it was just a great day of golf really.”
“I hit the ball really well. I missed two fairways and two greens but recovered from them pretty well and it was just a great day of golf really.”
Consadine won the annual 18-hole tournament with a round of 68, three strokes ahead of fellow A-grade player Josh Campbell.
“I didn’t really know what some of the other players had carded. I went into the clubhouse to grab some drinks and no one really said anything. Josh told me he blew out and had hit 77. If he told me he shot 71 I may have started to do things differently but who knows,” Consadine said.
He puts his annual good form down to coming out of some hotly contested competitions.
“This is just a chance to relax and all the pressure is off when you’re not too worried about what you’re doing. During the pennants you’re still playing good golf but it’s a bit tense and you’re focusing on plenty of other things,” Consadine said.
A memorable hole for Consadine on Saturday was the 16th.
“I duffed the tee shot, still made the fairway but it wasn’t where I wanted it. If you know the 16th there is a gully you have to deal with approaching the green. I was about 170 metres away but I took on the gully and some trees to the right. When the team ahead of us were clapping and cheering I knew I had nailed it. It was about an inch away from the pin.”
He said the greens were fast and it suited players such as himself and Campbell.
Winning the A-grade men’s nett was Andrew Jacobs from Brad Pettitt.
The Easter Open B-grade scratch winner was Ron Campbell from Steve Moore. Winning on nett score was Beres Lang and runner-up was Josh Marchant.
In C-grade Wayne Tiggeman won the scratch event from Ian Rhodes. For the net scores it was Bill Redden from Sean O’Connor. Redden’s nett score of 66 was the overall winner.
In the ladies stableford competition, Catherine Cox finished ahead of Julie Headley and Trish Jones.
