The Prime Minister was one of the politicians who established the ride in 1998 as a charity fundraiser, and since then it has raised more than $3 million for various causes such as Carers Australia, which will again be 2014’s chief beneficiary.
For the first time in the ride’s history, Mr Abbott has been absent this year due to commitments in Europe, but he has returned in time to join the riders in Mudgee on Saturday.
He plans to leave town with them as the Pollie Pedal tour continues towards Sydney on Saturday morning.
This year, 50 riders are making their way from Moree to Penrith, including Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, each contributing $100 per day to the cause along with $500 sponsorship.
The 2014 event has so far raised around $700,000.
The ride leaves Dubbo today and will reach Mudgee’s Robertson Park at around 1.30pm.
