Half of Mudgee High School Year 12 of 2013’s Rainbow Day funds are now being put to use again in the community to ultimately help local young people.

The beneficiaries of Year 12’s fundraising throughout 2013 were Mudgee District Hospital and youth mental health service Headspace.
The latter has begun to be put to use through programs such as the ‘Learning to Breathe’ and ‘Mindfulness in Young People’ workshop, run by staff from Headspace Bathurst at Club Mudgee this week.
It was attended by local teachers and people from PCYC care service, Youth Connections, and Mudgee Psychology.
The aim was to equip those that work with young people with the skills to facilitate programs within their own organisations to support good mental health.
Year Advisor for the group, Melissa Date, said that it’s good to see the funds being put to use locally.
“The students were very keen to see the money raised used in the Mudgee area and used to help local young people,” she said.
“It’s quite exciting to see that there are tools and opportunities available to provide kids with the skills to support them.”
She added that they’re hoping to hold more workshops next school term.
Another support service Headspace runs is eheadspace.
It’s an online and telephone mental health support for young people aged 12-25 years and their families or friends. Young people may contact eheadspace if they need advice, are worried about their mental health or are feeling isolated or alone, although it isn’t a crisis service.
eheadspace email, web chat and phone support provides flexible ways for young people who don’t have a Headspace centre nearby, or don’t feel ready to visit a centre, to get the help they need.
