Mudgee Triathlon Club will hold their first race of the season however, it won’t be a triathlon race.
Sunday’s race will be an aquathon – run, swim, run – because the club is still discussing their traffic management plan with Mid-Western Regional Council.
The club’s first three races of the season have been labelled as aquathons but president Rowan Rowlands is hopeful the December meeting will be a full triathlon event.
In his president’s message in the club’s September newsletter Rowlands addressed the issue.
“Club races will be in the form of aquathons initially due to issues with cycling on the busy roads which have been part of the course in the past,” Rowlands wrote.
Rowlands and his committee have been discussing changes to the short and long courses for this season, which could see the lower part of Lawson Street used as well as Short Street.
He said he has held positive discussions with Mid-Western Regional Council about how the triathlon club can continue to safely operate their races.
“I am enthusiastic for the season ahead,” he wrote.
“My mission statement for the tri club going forward is to strive for an organisation that is inclusive, supportive and progressive, and I know the committee will back me on these goals.”
Sunday’s races will be split into four categories – Little Devils, Big Devils, short course and long course.
Little Devils and Big Devils are the new names for the minis and midgets junior races.
The Little Devils will do a 500-metre run, 15m swim followed by another 500m run.
The Big Devils will compete over 1km run, 50m swim and another 1km run.
The short course consists of a 2km run, 150m swim and 2km run, and the long course is a 3km run, 350m swim and 3km run.
“As part of my club development strategy, I want to see our younger athletes looked after through junior development, I’m keen on fostering new members,” Rowlands continued.
The Central West Inter-Club Triathlon series will commence at Orange on November 23 with the host club looking for their sixth consecutive series win.
Sunday’s first race begins at 8am with registration at 7.30am.
