The project is the baby of James O’Neill from The Butcher Shop Café and he said that he wanted to bring diversity to the region and add something new to that increasingly residential area of town.
“It’s all about doing something different, if you put something ordinary out there no one would turn up,” he said.
“It’s designed by an architect [Cameron Anderson], it’s got a bit of modernism, a bit of shape to it, and I’ve seen it in other places and it works.
“It will find its way as we go along, but it’s in an area where the industrial meets suburbia and there’s nothing for the people out there at the moment or the tourists coming through that spot.”
The builder of the project is Ryan McGregor and he said that he is relishing the opportunity to work with a completely different medium.
“The whole point of this project is to be exciting and as a contractor I’m excited to be doing it because you don’t get an opportunity like this very often,” he said.
“Building with containers does pose its challenges, but it’s a structure that’s been brought on site and has pretty much been assembled within 24 hours.
“The fit out will still take some time but a large part of the project has been assembled, it’s an automatic structure.”
The containers came from a company called Tiger Containers who have been around for about 30 years but have only recently diversified and gone into construction.
