Starting at midnight tonight, the police will be out in force on NSW enforcing road rules in attempt to keep the holiday road toll to a minimum.
The double demerit points period - during which offenders risk instant loss of license - begins on December 24 and continues into the New Year.
However, despite the regularity of the warnings, it appears that the message is not getting thought to many drivers - not only at Christmas time but throughout the year.
At the final sitting of Mudgee Local Court for 2014, 103 matters were heard including 10 sentenced for drink driving and 14 other cases involving other driving offences, including driving whilst disqualified or unlicensed, and reckless or negligent driving. Another three drink driving cases were adjourned.
At least one repeat offenders will be spending Christmas in jail.
Christmas and New Year are a high risk period on our roads. It’s a time when there are plenty of festivities, often involving alcohol, but also a time when people embark on long road trips to Christmas and holiday destinations.
This Christmas, take notice of what the police try to tell us every year.
Buckle up, stick to the speed limit, allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and don’t drink if you are driving.
Get home safety and help to keep the roads fatality free this holiday season.
