Graffiti inside the belltower that the pole sits on top of indicates the original flag pole was removed in March 1950.
This was likely due to rust and/or water damage, but for six decades it wasn’t replaced until last Thursday.
The work to reinstall the flagpole was thanks to Luke Morris from Barnson’s Engineering, Mark Furney from Furneys and Jamie McRae from 3 Core Electrical.
The new flagpole has had floodlights installed at its base to enable the flag to be flown at night time.
And there are still plans to install a decorative frieze around the base of the flagpole to bring it further into line with the historic look of the building.
Mudgee Public School principal Alan Kerr said that the work is all part of their efforts to highlight the heritage nature of the 1876 building.
Further work is also planned for the school’s entrance and section of the front fence will be replaced.
The school administration building features in the 2015 calendar by renowned local artist Sam Paine for the month of June.
