Speaking to Doctor John Galloway about his work in criminology and contribution to rural communities would convince most he is a worthy selection among today’s Australia Day Honours List.

While in conversation with the newly appointed AM, it was pleasing to recognise his love for Australia and Mudgee. He and his wife Wendy have lived here for the past 12 years and recently Dr Galloway’s son and wife moved to the region.
Today a selection of Mid-Western Region residents will also be recognised for their contributions in our community and we know they share Dr Galloway’s love of Mudgee and its surrounds.
This is what Australia Day in this region should be about – celebrating the Mid-Western Region’s contribution to our country.
It is easy to see from the nominees in this year’s Mid-Western Region Australia Day Awards we have people from a range of backgrounds that are enthusiastic about promoting our region as a great place to work and live, as well as taking their time to actively keep our region progressing.
Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove said this week “we are fortunate as a community (Australia) to have so many outstanding people willing to dedicate themselves to the betterment of our nation.”
He was right when saying these same people “are a source of courage, support and inspiration, and we a stronger, safer and more caring nation because of them.”
Often people who serve the community do not seek accolades but Australia Day provides the perfect platform to tap them on the shoulder and say “well done”.
Before we take that first sip of beer or throw the first lamb chop on the barbecue today, maybe take a moment to thank those in our region who have given their all. It might also be an opportune time to ask yourself, how will I contribute to our region in 2015?
