In a break from their Higher School Certificate (HSC) study schedule a group of the students were out and about shaking donation buckets at the local concert.
The final fundraising total will be announced at the Year 12 Formal on Friday, November 20, when the cheques will be presented to the beneficiaries.
Throughout the year students have raised money through the annual Rainbow Day, the Mudgee Wolves Gala Day, a monster raffle, plus a variety of activities such as cake stalls.
Along with donations from groups and businesses including Peabody Wilpinjong, the CWA, Club Mudgee, and more.
Year 12 advisor Penny Smith said ADOTG was a nice way to finish off the group’s fundraising and means they well and truly achieved what they set out to collect.
“Everyone at the concert was very generous as usual, which is lovely, and certainly now we can purchase everything that we wanted for the Mudgee Maternity Ward and PCYC,” she said.
Ms Smith added that her year group has continued the tradition of Mudgee High students “giving back” in their final year of school, which has been going strong since 2002 and changing a few perceptions of local young people.
“I think it’s been great and it breaks that mould of younger people not getting in and fundraising and helping the community,” she said.
“In Mudgee it speaks for itself when we can raise over $30,000 in a year to put back into the community.
“It really debunks that myth that ‘youth only think about themselves’.
“And continues the trend that’s been going for fourteen years now and raising well over $200,000 for local community groups and charities.
“It doesn’t look like slowing down because everyone is so generous and continue to support us, so we must be doing something right.”
The group also made an on the spot decision at ADOTG to give $500 of their donations to the Riannon’s Wheels fundraiser to secure enough money to purchase a handicapped van with a wheelchair lift for local woman Riannon Taylor.
Riannon has been in a wheelchair since 2011 when complications with her diabetes placed her in hospital in a coma.
