The NSW Polocrosse Club Championships, which were hosted by the Cassilis Club, were held across the June long weekend at the Coolah fields.
And it wasn’t just sides from NSW either as the event attracted almost 100 teams from right across the country.
Over 500 players traveled to compete against some of the top clubs and players in Australia.
The Gulgong Polocrosse Club took seven teams to the event and they certainly didn’t disappoint, finishing an impressive fourth overall.
The Gulgong F grade defeated Galloping Gully Pollocrosse Club – from the Narrabri area - in their final and the B grade women’s team were close runners up to New England Girls' School (NEGS) in their division final.
The highlight of the weekend for the local club was the Championship Grade Mixed final featuring Gulgong and Jugiong, a club from the central east part of the Riverina region.
The Gulgong mixed team included Nicole Hill, Grace Halstead, Rachael Hogden, Chris Anderson, Clancey Knight and Tom Trisley.
The side was unfortunately defeated 23 – 12, but went down fighting in a brilliant final by the skillful Jugiong team.
Gulgong player, Nicole Hill, was rewarded for her fine efforts throughout the tournament when she received Best No. 2 for the Championship grade.
Ultimately it was the Albury-Holbrook Club who finished in first place at the end of the carnival.
And club member Abbott Grills and his horse Percussion were awarded best men’s combination and overall champion horse and rider of the carnival.
Lucy Grills, also from the Albury-Holbrook club, won champion ladies horse and rider.
While Will Weston, of the Jugiong Club, received best horse and rider for the mixed competitions.
The strong performance by the Gulgong Polocrosse Club was a positive turnaround after their last outing at Bunnan, which as expected was a tougher one when they had less players available.
Which was made even more significant given the quality of opposition, including state and national representative players and some of the top clubs.
The next round of competition for the teams was to be the Dunedoo carnival scheduled for this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26, 2016).
However the event has been postponed until later in the year most likely August or September – due the rain-affected playing grounds with more wet weather forecasted.
Therefore the next event Gulgong players will be a part of will be on Saturday, July 9, at Marra in Queensland.
The following weekend (July 16 and 17) will see teams headed to separate events with carnivals to be held in Jugiong and Narrabri on the same dates.
