Brock has an interest in a career as a mechanic and the work experience program gives him the opportunity to gain some real experience in this type of work.
This will assist Brock to make decisions about what he will do when he leaves school.
In relation to his work at Everything Mechanical, Brock states, “I really like it. The people there are really good.
“I get to see what it’s like working as a mechanic and it’s probably what I will try and do when I leave school.”
Brock works each Friday at Everything Mechanical instead of attending school for that day.
He will do this for at least a school term.
If he has an interest in other fields he may choose to do some work experience in those fields as well.
Stuart Barnes, the owner of Everything Mechanical, has been a long-time supporter of school work experience programs.
When asked about his support for these programs Stuart stated, “I can relate to these programs.
“ I didn’t do very well at school, but when I went to TAFE things changed.
“I started to do really well because it was something I was interested in.
“I want to help these young people do the same, to give them the opportunity to try something they might be interested in.”
The Mudgee High School LINK Program caters for approximately 25 Year 10 students each year.
The program provides for a more practical approach to learning and preparation for students who are considering leaving school at the end of year 10.
The program is supported by Glencore Coal and TAFE Western.
