At site 54 at the Australian Rural Education Centre (AREC), district veterinarians and biosecurity officers will be on hand to answer questions about the prevention and treatment of livestock diseases, farm biosecurity, and the regulations and requirements covering the movement of stock in NSW.
Local Land Services pasture specialist, Clare Edwards, will be at the site on Friday, July 15, to answer questions about pastures and grass identification and livestock specialist, Brett Littler, will assist with queries about livestock health, nutrition, and trading.
Field day displays will include traps for pigs and wild dogs, information on rabbit control, bait site preparation and pest monitoring techniques, as well as a feature display of native eucalyptus varieties from the Mudgee area.
Land owners are encouraged to bring in their own samples of grasses and other plants (in sealed plastic bags) so Local Land Services staff can help with identification.
Landholders can also access information about the proposed Biodiversity Act that will replace the NSW Native Vegetation Act, and about the Biosecurity Act which will change the way landholders manage pest animals and weeds.
Central Tablelands Local Land Services is also launching the 2016-2017 Funding and Grants Program at this year’s field days, aimed at farmers, landholders, and community groups across the Central Tablelands.
Funding will be targeted towards remnant woodland conservation, native grasslands and revegetation activities, property planning, groundcover management, the protection of threatened species, and the restoration and protection of creeks and rivers.
A special feature of the Local Land Services exhibit at the Mudgee Field Days will be a series of practical livestock demonstrations on Friday, July 15:
Times for livestock demonstrations are:
- 10am: Getting into beef: Practical demonstration of cattle heatlh procedures.
- 11am: Cattle breeds: Forum featuring live cattle.
- 12 noon: Sheep health: Keeping a healthy flock. Practical demonstration of sheep anatomy and common diseases
- 1:30pm: Understanding the market: Learn how to assess your cattle for market.
