The deputy speaker fills in for the speaker to ensure parliamentary procedure is followed and things are conducted in an orderly manner.
Having previously held the position of the National’s chief whip, Mr Coulton said his experience would help him in the role.
“You have to have an ability to get on with all kinds of people and diffuse conflict rather than creating it,” Mr Coulton said.
He said it also required the ability to place yourself outside of the discussion.
However, Mr Coulton said he would have to do some homework and brush up on the laws to prepare himself.
