Council resolved on May 18 to prepare a cost estimate for the lawn cemetery. However at Wednesday’s meeting, council was told that the cost of extending town water to the site was in the vicinity of $200,000, With additional expenses, the total cost would be $287,000.
Using tank water would involve carting a minimum of 1350 litres of water a day to the site.
Cr Esme Watson said she was disappointed with the staff recommendation not to proceed with the proposal, saying the lawn cemetery would serve the area for a long time.
Cr Martens moved that it be included in the next budget for consideration.
However, Cr Peter Shelley argued there were more important priorities for Rylstone and Kandos, including a pedestrian bridge, Angus Avenue refurbishment in Kandos and an extended childcare centre.
The motion was lost.
