The visitors had closed the gap to the Terriers on two occasions however Gulgong managed to cross the try line to keep them at arm’s length for the win.
Tries to Steve Hardy, Brad James (2), Brendon Carter, Cal Ruming, and Kurt Gudgeon (2), and goals to Mat Stott (3) and Steve Haney, setting up the win.
Terriers captain-coach Brad James said that his team did well to snuff out the Unicorns who are no slouches.
“They’re a hard team to judge, their backrowers are pretty good and a few of their backs are fairly handy, but we got away with the win,” he said.
“We probably didn’t play the best we could but it’s all stuff we can build on.
“After half time they got a quick couple of tries but it was good that we reined them in and kept them from running away with it.”
This weekend they’re away to Coonamble for a grand final place against Gilgandra, the Bears had looked like the benchmark side until they lost to the Panthers.
Even though they may be wobbling James said that Coonable are still a dangerous team, especially at home.
“They’ve had three hard fought matches against Gil now, one after another, we had a bye last week and I think the boys recovered well after that and it ended up being a blessing in disguise,” he said.
“Hopefully we can turn it up now going into a qualifying semi-final, because they’ll be hard up there and we need to be on our game.”
