On Saturday evening, the vandals pushed over the sandstone pillars and capstones, leaving blocks scattered in the church yard.
Father David Craig said repairing the fence, which is thought to be more than 100 years old, would have been expensive and take a long time if a claim were made through insurance.
He was concerned that the damaged fence would look unsightly to visitors attending events such as this weekend’s Flavours of Mudgee.
“It is a landmark and it looks disgusting. It is disgraceful,” he said.
However, after the church’s plight was made public through Facebook by Hugh Bateman on Sunday, local man Rob Waters has offered to carry out the work free of charge.
The church is accepting donations to help pay for materials for the repairs. People who wish to help can contact the St John Anglican Church Parish Office on 6372 1126.
